Twilight Peach Crisp

It’s early August and just as the summer heat is just upon us it’s the twilight of the peach season in Texas.
While some orchards have closed, one local grower has a variety that they’re picking through August 9th , so it’s not sunset yet on one of my favorite summer treats.

I didn’t hesitate when my neighbor Phil offered some of his peach bounty to me a couple of weeks ago.

Open Your Eyes and Tastebuds to the Tomatillo

Mexican is the cuisine I crave the most, but cook the least.

I offer no explanation for this contradictory behavior other than I have grown up in and still nest in the middle of Tex-Mex heaven where Mexican restaurants are almost as proliferous as Starbuck’s stores in San Francisco where there’s one on every corner.

Fearing's Cowboy Shrimp on White Corn Grits

It was bare concrete and a bit dusty on my first visit, but, oh, the vision of what’s to come.

It is "Fearing's" and the mastermind behind the vision, Dean Fearing, stepped lively and spoke passionately about his venture on a recent hard-hat tour of the restaurant's space in the Ritz-Carlton Dallas.

A Pound Cake and A Happy Face

I never had a sweet tooth as kid. This was much to my mother’s chagrin I’m sure.

She would pour forth as much or more effort on her desserts as the main dish. Sometimes I would indulge in a forkful or two of the ooey gooey sweet ending, but more often than not I would take an extra helping of vegetables or a piece of bread instead.

Garlic and Thyme Roasted Pork Loin with Brandy Cream Sauce

Pork.

Check.

Thyme.

Check.

Garlic.

Check.

I stood in my kitchen last Saturday afternoon taking inventory of everything I needed for my “Open The Bottle Night” with friends where we would share a meal and open a special bottle of wine.

Comfort Food: Macaroni and Cheese

As comfort food and cheese goes it doesn't get any better than macaroni and cheese.

I've been on the hunt this past year for the ultimate macaroni and cheese recipe excluding the boxed stuff.

A Fondue Night

Emily joined me for dinner this past Thursday night and we indulged our mutual love of cheese with a fondue dinner.

If ever I were given the unfortunate choice of emptying my fridge of all items save one, cheese would win. But olives and eggs would give the cheese a good run for its money.

So Many Recipes, So Little Time

With the exception of a quick trip to San Diego last week, my suitcase has been gathering dust since the week before Thanksgiving. I love to travel, but I love to cook more. And no travel means lots of time in the kitchen - cooking, experimenting, tasting, and loving it.

Over the past few weeks I’ve cooked for friends and family, and sometimes just myself.

Savoring the Taste of Pot Roast and Time With Family

While sitting at a family dinner recently I thought that of all the venues where we engage in conversation our exchanges during the sharing of a meal is the most delightful and memorable.

We are loud, sometimes irreverent, and we’re bent to pick on anyone, guests included, when we see the potential for a good-natured laugh. We recount family history, sometimes we talk politics, but mostly it’s just the sharing of our lives through unremarkable stories about ourselves or others that we find amusing or entertaining. And we learn about each other in the process.

Deviled, Er, Heavenly Eggs

I love eggs. Scrambled. Poached. Boiled. Over-medium and fried.

I like them elegantly crumbled in a salad, delicately situated atop an enchilada (now that’s authentic Mexican), simply sandwiched between two slices of bread with a bit of mustard, or deliciously deviled.

Chicken with Rosemary and Lemon Salt

Though I’ve never tracked it, I’m sure I spend more time in the kitchen trying new recipes than remaking old ones, “old” here equals tried at least once before.

A recipe has to really wow me to make it to the keeper list and this one did: Michael Chiarello's “Chicken with Rosemary and Lemon Salt”. It was simple and flavorful, two important keeper criteria especially for cooking on a weeknight.

Saturday Morning Scones

On my Indian-spice-buying-fling a few weeks back I picked up a bag of star anise; it was an impulse purchase since none of the recipes I had looked at called for this rather mysterious, star-shaped spice.

So I was pleasantly surprised to find an article in the January 2006 issue of Bon Appetit magazine devoted entirely to star anise.

In Search of Fenugreek

The irony of it all is that I pass by this little store on every visit to my parent’s house but I had to search to find it.

Several recipes in an Indian cookbook that Hannah had given me for Christmas mentioned a spice that I had never heard of and most certainly had never seen on the shelves of my local grocery store – fenugreek.
